2011 CAOA Spring Conference – Loveland, CO

As the Colorado Airport Operators Association (CAOA) concluded its annual Spring Conference in Loveland on June 3, 2011 Association President Troy Stover said “this years venue, sessions, and networking opportunities were highly effective and reflects the tremendous value in the annual spring gathering for Colorado airport professionals, exhibitors, engineers, consultants, FAA, and Colorado Division of Aeronautics.”

“It has been pretty challenging for the past several years for airports and business/commercial aviation,” Stover said. “But even in this climate, the Airport Operators continue to seek out effective venues for conducting business, sharing information and networking, which is why CAOA’s Spring Conference remains a must-attend on the Colorado Airport Operator’s calendar.”

Here is an overview of the Conference details, Stover cited:

  • Participation by 19 Exhibitors.
  • 17 sponsors totaling over $10,000
  • 136 Aviation professionals registered.
  • Over 130 attended the opening welcome and remarks by the honorable Loveland Mayor Cecil Gutierrez.
  • The Key Note Address by Ms. Catherine Lang, FAA Deputy Administrator for Airports, was very informative along with questions and answers from the attendees.
  • The session presentations were very diverse and informative:

  • Airport Air Service Development – Bruce Tarletsky, Sabre Airline Solutions, Director of Airport Consulting Services
  • Airport Safety Management Systems – Heidi Ann Benaman, Faith Group, LLC, Project Manager
  • The Modern Airport Executive – Annel Kuelplman, ADK Executive Search, Vice President
  • DIA Commercial Economic Development – John Ackerman, DIA Deputy Manager of Aviation and Chief Commercial Officer
  • Airport Energy Sustainability – Norm Higley, DIA Director of Environmental Services.  Stephen Barrett, Harris Miller Miller & Hanson, Inc., Director of Clean Energy
  • Future Airport Professionals – Doug & Annell Kuelpman, ADK Executive Search, President and Vice President
  • Wildlife Management – Dennis McGraw, CWB, S.E.H. Natural resource Practice Center, Senior Wildlife Biologist
  • Overview of Allegient Travel Company – Keith Hansen, Esq., Allegiant Travel Company, Manager, Airport Planning
  • The Evening Dinner included a special presentation by Dr. Ronald Sega, Vice President and Enterprise Executive for Energy and Environment, Colorado State University, and former Astronaut on the Space Shuttles Discovery and Atlantis.
  • The Evening was topped off with an Area Craft Brewers Private Sampling Event

Friday morning sessions:

  • Next Generation Workforce – Keith Reester, Jr., City of Loveland, Director of Public Works
  • CAOA General Membership Meeting
  • FAA and CDOT-Aeronautics updates

The CAOA Membership Board Election results:

  •  Airport representatives were re-elected:
    • Steve Lee, DIA
    • Kathy Lucas, Grand Junction Regional Airport
    • Ken Lawson, Front Range Airport
    • Brian Condie, Garfield County Regional Airport
  • CORPORATE Members were also re-elected:
    • Terry VanSant, VanSant Group
    • Chris Greene, RS&H

 

  • Friday afternoon the CAOA Spring Conference was concluded with closing remarks from the honorable Mayor Karen Weitkunat, Ft. Collins, and Mayor Cecil Gutierrez, Loveland.

The Executive Board meeting was very productive with the CAOA Board decision to host the 2012 Spring Conference hosted by Eagle County Airport.  Chris Anderson, Terminal Manager presented 7 proposals to host the conference in Vail.  Other items considered by the Board:

  • NPRM for SMS comments are due by July 5, 2011
  • CAOA financial report
  • Training Updates, Environmental training will be hosted by DIA in October 2011
  • Aeronautics update on Wildlife Hazardous Assessments
  • An update on the new website design www.coloradoairports.com
  • 2013 Spring Conference – Hayden/Steamboat
  • 2014 Spring Conference – Pueblo

This year’s Spring Conference was clearly an outstanding success and congratulations and special thanks to Ft. Collins/Loveland Municipal Airport Manager Jason Licon, Brenda Orndorff, Jodi Lessman,  Larry Mack and Public Works Director for the City of Loveland, Keith Reester, Jr.
