On July 23, the Boulder City Council voted 8-1 to continue operating Boulder Municipal Airport and to pursue new federal and state grant funding for its upkeep, ending a six-year campaign by some council members to close the field and redevelop its 179 acres for housing. The city had stopped accepting FAA grants in 2020 amid the closure push, but an FAA letter in 2023 affirmed that prior grant assurances tied to $12.7 million in federal funding obligate Boulder to keep the airport open “in perpetuity” without FAA permission to close it. A subsequent city lawsuit seeking to waive that obligation was dismissed, and the city did not appeal. Councilmember Mark Wallach, the leading proponent of closure, resigned following the vote.
