The FAA has awarded Aspen-Pitkin County Airport (Sardy Field) $7,372,663 in Airport Improvement Program funding to shift Runway 15/33, part of a broader $615 million national AIP round announced August 18-20. The runway must move 80 feet west and widen to 150 feet to create the 400-foot runway-to-taxiway separation the FAA requires for ASE to qualify as a Design Group III airport, a longstanding safety and capacity constraint at the high-altitude, high-traffic mountain airport. This grant builds on a $2 million FAA award for the project’s design work earlier this year and funds enabling work — including relocation of nearby Owl Creek Road — ahead of construction closures planned to begin in April 2027. Pitkin County officials have been advancing the project through county approvals throughout 2026.
