On Saturday, August 8, the FAA issued a ground stop and ground delay program at Denver International Airport, citing FAA staffing shortages combined with high winds. Departing flights nationwide bound for DIA saw average delays of 143 minutes, while arriving flights faced roughly 15-minute delays due to wind, with the FAA warning that figure could grow. The ground stop briefly affected departures from air traffic control centers covering the western and central U.S. (ZLA, ZLC, ZDV, ZKC, ZAB, and ZMP). This follows a separate incident just days earlier, on August 3–4, when severe weather forced 22–29 flights to divert from DIA to Colorado Springs Airport, with five passengers requiring medical attention for turbulence-related injuries.
